TULSA, OK – April 5, 2013 – TWS Tulsa held its 9th Annual High School Senior Welding Competition on February 23, 2013. Over 1,000 people were in attendance this year, 255 of which were high school seniors from across the nation representing a total of 14 states: AR, AZ, CA, IA, IL, KS, KY, LA, MO, NE, NM, OK, TX, and WI. Participating students had the opportunity to compete for over $55,000 in scholarships and prizes. All 255 competitors, regardless of placement, were awarded a $500 TWS scholarship. Additional scholarships and prizes were given to the top 25 winners.

Tulsa Welding School also hosts a High School Senior Welding Competition at its Jacksonville, FL campus every year. Between the two competitions, TWS awarded over $245,000 in scholarships and prizes to participating students last year.

This year, TWS had 20 vendors participate in the welding competition. Vendors set up tables, displays, and some had hands-on demonstrations at the event. Each vendor donated scholarships and prizes for the winners, and contributed to the gift bags that all of the contestants received.

  • First Place – Full tuition scholarship to Tulsa Welding School, Lincoln 140 SP MIG Welding Machine, Lincoln Auto-Darkening Welding Hood, Hilti Gloves, Lincoln Hat: Nick Lerma
  • Second Place – ½ Tution Scholarship to TWS, Lincoln Ready Pack, Lincoln Hat: Levi Wells
  • Third and Fourth Place – ¼ Scholarship to TWS, Lincoln Ready Pack, Lincoln Hat: Tyler Yard, Zach Sackman
  • Fifth Place – TWS Complete Gear Package, TWS Scholarship, Lincoln Auto-Darkening Welding Hood, REVCO Back Pack, Lincoln Hat: Bradley Bramel

There were over 1,000 people in attendance.

Aside from the actual competition, attendees and their families had the opportunity to tour the TWS campus, speak to admissions representatives and attend demonstrations by TWS faculty and welding industry experts.

The competition itself requires participants to complete a timed arc welding test using various positions and techniques. Contestants are graded on adherence to procedure, the quality of the weld, and final completion time.
