Where Can I Work as an HVAC Technician in Dallas?

As an HVAC technician, you have career options. They include:

Franchise HVAC Companies

Many HVAC companies are part of a franchise model that allows them to take advantage of a central customer service phone number and coverage in their specific region. The main company will take the calls and pay for the advertising, while sending out leads to those franchisees that service the region. Since they get a lot of leads and service many HVAC homes, franchise HVAC companies are always hiring trained HVAC technicians.

Local HVAC Company

Many local HVAC companies offer HVAC services in their local community. They advertise themselves independently and don’t have to pay a franchise fee. They hire from the local community and may have multiple locations within a region.

Independent Contractor

If you want to start an HVAC company for yourself or choose to be an independent contractor that works in residential and commercial HVAC, you can get a license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. To be eligible for licensure, you must either work as an apprentice for 4 years or complete a formal training program and work as an apprentice for 3 years. After you become licensed, the sky’s the limit.

How Many Hours Do HVAC Techs Work?

Most HVAC technicians that work for a franchise or local HVAC company have a full-time schedule. You may have shifts or take on pre-scheduled appointments during the week. Some emergencies do happen that may call you out to a location to service an HVAC system on nights or weekends. Only a handful of techs work part-time.

When temperatures are at their extremes during heating and cooling seasons, it’s also common for HVAC techs to work overtime and irregular hours to meet the seasonal spikes in demand.

If you are an independent contractor, it is up to you to schedule appointments based on the client’s schedule. Some people are not home during the day to meet HVAC technicians, so some appointments may occur evenings and weekends.

What Kind of Conditions Do HVAC Techs Work In?

The majority of HVAC techs work inside on equipment located in closets and basements accessible from within a structure. However, some work will be completed on residential balconies and commercial roofs. Heat pumps and air conditioning units can be located outside to draw in cool outdoor air and expel warm air from indoors. These working conditions both indoors and outdoors make safety a priority in the HVAC field.
