What is Pipe Welding?

Pipe welding is a method of joining two pipes together. The different welding techniques that a pipe welder must be experienced with include arc welding, MIG welding, and TIG welding.

Arc Welding – the different types of arc welding include SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW

  • SMAW – shielded metal arc welding for pipe welding with no flux or shielding gas.
  • GMAW – gas metal arc welding that offers better control to deliver high-quality welds
  • FCAW – flux-cored arc welding that provides high productivity for pipe welding.

MIG Welding – metal inert gas welding that processes an electric arc between an electrode and a metal workpiece.

How Do You Become a Pipe Welder?

Completing the Professional Welder program at Tulsa Welding School is a great way to become a pipe welder. You can be ready for a welding apprenticeship in as little as seven months. This program offers interactive workshops and welding training with industry-standard welding equipment. Demand

There is a demand for pipe welders. The U.S. infrastructure and increased government funding to fix this infrastructure means additional welders are needed. There will be 47,600 openings for welders projected through 2031.4 Most of these openings will be as a result of baby boomers retiring.

In addition to oil and gas, you can work as a pipe welder in many industries. Pipe welding is used to build scaffolding and water treatment plants. Pipes can be located in difficult-to-reach places and require more skill than most other welding techniques. You are trained to take on most challenges if you can weld pipes.

Welding is more than a job; it is a career. Robotics and AI are not coming for all welding jobs. Many pipe welding jobs need human judgment and the ability to maneuver tight spaces.
